As part of the Middlesex Cricket School Sport Strategy 2013 has seen the appointment of School Cricket Ambassadors for the first time. Based in Hub schools in nine different boroughs these ambassadors were chosen by their teachers, coaches and peers to help promote cricket in their local community.
In recognition of their achievement all School Cricket Ambassadors were invited to attend the Middlesex Panthers verses Essex Eagles Friends Life t20 match at Lord’s on Thursday 4th July. Not only did all ambassadors get the opportunity to enjoy the action but they were also invited on to the famous Lord’s playing surface to collect a memento to mark their appointment. The awards were handed out by Vinny Codrington, MCCC Chief Executive, Mark Ramprakash, MCCC Batting Coach, and Beth Morgan, Chance to Shine Coaching Ambassador.
Through the Cricket Foundation Young Adult funding, Middlesex Cricket have developed close relationships with 10 Hub schools, assisting them in the creation of a school cricket club, complete with student committee, as well as training staff and young leaders to deliver cricket. These Hub schools aim to bridge the gap in the pathway between a young players first experience at primary school and migration in to a club environment, all the time promoting a lifelong affinity with cricket and a healthy lifestyle.
The role that the School Cricket Ambassadors play in their own school includes preparing for Hub Club training, attracting new players and helping to integrate them when they attend sessions. Vinny Codrington underlined their importance to the success of cricket at their school and beyond, “to have committed ambassadors within a peer group really helps to attract new players and to promote cricket as a sport that can be enjoyed by all, their leadership also highlights the varied roles that people play within a club environment and hopefully their involvement will continue for many years to come”.
A special mention must also go to Shivani Unadkat from Park High School who was voted as Chance to Shine Ambassador of the Year. This was decided by all Middlesex Junior Participation Officers, including Ruan Louw who has worked with Shivani throughout the year, who said “Shivani is a fantastic administration and organisational support to Park High and Mike Whittaker (PE Teacher). She undertakes the administration and registry and is very keen in sessions, where she takes a lead among her peers. She is a fantastic role model and the award is much deserved”.
