Middlesex - 60 for 0
Middlesex Second Eleven began their latest County Championship encounter today against London rivals Surrey at Southgate, although not before the umpires were forced to delay the start by an hour at the Walker Ground, after heavy overnight rain left the outfield damp.
Captained by Sam Robson, Middlesex went into the game with a strong eleven, and winning the toss the home skipper had no hesitation in asking the opposition to bat first.
Tim Murtagh and Tom Barber were given the new ball and it took the former just fourteen balls to remove opener Patel for three, with Jack Davies taking the catch behind - Surrey 8 for 1.
George Scott was brought into the attack as first change bowler in the fourteenth over and like Murtagh he too had an immediate impact, trapping Welch in front for 27 in just his second over, reducing Surrey to 60 for 2.
Just fifteen runs later Scott struck again, removing opener and Surrey skipper Arun Harinath for 31, with Davies again taking the catch behind - Surrey 75 for 3.
Woods and Green then set about consolidating and rebuilding the Surrey innings, batting watchfully, and putting on 57 for the fourth wicket, before Murtagh, back into the attack for his second spell, dislodged Woods for 32 - Davies again taking the catch behind - his third of the innings.
Dahl joined Green at the crease, although couldn’t make any significant impact, departing soon after to the spin of Ollie Rayner, stumped by Davies for just 6 - Surrey 155 for 5.
Surrey’s number five Green had batted patiently, facing 111 deliveries, before he became the sixth wicket to fall for a well worked 52, succumbing to the pace of Barber, as Jack Davies claimed his fifth victim of the innings - Surrey 174 for 6.
Wicket number seven came when Barber struck again to break the partnership of Pillans and Laraman, who had batted well to put on 41 before the left-arm quick got the wicket of Pillans, caught by Scott for 36 - Surrey 215 for 7.
Rayner then wrapped the innings up in quick fashion, as the spinner picked up the final three wickets of the innings. First to go was Dunford, caught by Robson for 5, then Virdi, caught by Lace for a duck, and finally Laraman, caught by George Scott for 23.
Surrey has collapsed from 215 for 6 to 241 all out, with Rayner the pick of the Middlesex bowlers, finishing with figures of 4 for 48 from 18.2 overs.
Middlesex’s reply began with Robson and Holden opening up for the hosts, and the pair successfully negotiated their way to the close, putting on 60 for the opening wicket before stumps were drawn.
