MIDDLESEX WOMEN FALL TO DEFEAT AGAINST HAMPSHIRE WOMEN

Having been asked to bat first at Old Elizabethans CC, openers Saskia Horley and Artemis Downer set about looking for a strong start.

Downer fell in the second over however, beginning what was to be a difficult batting innings.

Captain Natasha Miles walked to the crease at number three and batted nicely in partnership with Horley, taking their side to 37 for 1 in the eleventh over of the innings when the latter fell for 21 to the bowling of Sophie Mitchelmore.

The home side were never fully able to get a hold of the Hampshire attack who bowled with discipline. Regular wickets left Middlesex struggling on 100 for 6 when Miles was bowled by Finty Trussler for 31, the top score of the Middlesex innings.

Georgia Irving (28*) marshalled the tail well, running hard between the wickets and turning ones into two's to take her side to a respectable score but one that felt a little light, with Middlesex bowled out for 145 in the 41st over.

On a wicket that assisted the bowlers, the home team would have felt themselves in with a chance of victory if they could take early wickets.

The first fell in the 8th over when Talitha Stanley was bowled by Bhavika Gajipra for 9 but Middlesex would then have to wait until the 22nd over before finding another breakthrough.

A partnership of 89 between Hampshire captain Trussler (62) and Mitchelmore (28) all but sealed the game for the visitors when Trussler was caught and bowled off the bowling of Saskia Horley.

Gajipra picked up a second wicket in the following over, with Mitchelmore falling for 28, but an unbeaten partnership between Rachel King and Mia Clark saw Hampshire Women over the line in the 29th over and claiming victory by seven wickets.
