The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first on a good looking Lord's wicket, which proved to be a good decision, as they piled on 384 before stumps were drawn at the close. A irst Championship hundred of the year for England's Jason Roy was the highlight of the Surrey innings. Middlesex's bowlers stuck to their task and picked up 8 Surrey wickets throughout the day, however Surrey finished the day the happier of the two sides at the close of play.
