On Thursday 16th May Middlesex players both past and present gathered at Lord’s for their annual Players’ Association event at the Home of Cricket.
Established in its current format in 2017, the Players’ Association aims to bring Middlesex cricketers from all generations together for a special day at Lord’s, invited as guests of the club, where they can get together with former and current teammates, in a relaxed and social environment, to catch up on the good times.
Almost one hundred players from both men’s and women’s Middlesex sides came together at the top of the Mound Stand for this year’s event, held on the third day of Middlesex’s Specsavers County Championship match against Leicestershire, for a special event this year held in support of the Ruth Strauss Foundation.
Andrew Strauss was in attendance himself and spoke to the guests about Ruth and the aims of the foundation he has set up to fund research into rare forms of lung cancer. An auction was held to raise funds for the foundation with a generous amount raised and donated to the Foundation.
Former player Nigel Ross, who has been instrumental in organising Middlesex’s Players’ Association Days commented on this year’s event:
"This year’s Players Association Day by any measure was a fantastic success.
“Run in Association with The Ruth Strauss Charity Foundation, the day was extremely well supported with a tremendous number of past and current players, sponsors and guests. As one can imagine, there was great deal of camaraderie throughout, with some serious reminiscing going on about matches won and lost, swapping stories and regaling tales over a libation or two.
“Our Association is still very keen to reach out to qualifying members to come and join us in this annual event, which has turned in to an extravaganza in association with a great charitable cause, and one so very close to all our Middlesex members’ hearts.”
Any former players who have not heard from us regarding this event, please get in contact with the club’s Business Support Manager, Hannah Baxter, on [email protected]
