Middlesex Cricket is delighted to announce that left-arm spinner Thilan Walallawita has signed an extension to his contract with the Club.
Earlier this year the Club announced that the Sri Lankan born left-arm spinner had been granted British Citizenship and is now able to be registered as a local cricketer – his latest contract extension will see him remain at Lord’s until at least the end of the 2024 season.
Walallawita has played through the Middlesex Age Group sides since the age of twelve, before he joined the Middlesex Academy and went on to earn his first professional contract in 2020.
He made both his first-class and T20 debuts later that summer and his List-A debut in 2021 and has to date made a total of 34 appearances for the Club, 11 in first-class cricket, 9 in List-A cricket and 14 in the T20 format of the game.
On securing the long-term signature of Walallawita, Middlesex’s Head of Men’s Performance Cricket, Alan Coleman, commented:
“We are really pleased to have secured Thilan’s services for the next two years and are very much looking forward to seeing him develop as a cricketer over the coming seasons.
“He is such a popular member of the dressing room here and offers us a huge amount both off and on the field.
“Thilan is an immense talent, and a real prospect, and we couldn’t be happier that he has committed the next phase of his career to Middlesex Cricket.”
On signing his contract extension, Walallawita himself commented:
“Having been at Middlesex since a youngster it has always been my dream to play professionally for the Club and I am delighted to extend my contract for a further two years.
“Everyone at the Club has been extremely supportive of me and the journey I have been on to qualify as a local cricketer, and I am really looking forward to being able to repay the faith they have shown in me.
“It is an honour to play for such a club, especially at Lord’s, and I am excited to now be able to focus on cementing my place in the side in all formats and to contributing to our success moving forward.
“Having secured promotion into Division One of the Championship, the squad are all really excited about what the future holds, and we can’t wait for next season and the chance to prove ourselves against the best sides in the country.”
