Middlesex Cricket is today delighted to announce that Toby Roland-Jones has been awarded a Testimonial Year in 2024 in recognition of his services to the Club.
The Ashford-born seamer, now 36, joined Middlesex in 2010, and has to date made a total of 255 appearances for the Club across all three domestic formats.
He made his debut appearance for the Club in April 2010 in a seven-wicket Clydesdale Bank 40 win against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road. This was the first of 61 List-A appearances Roland-Jones has made for the Club to date, in which he has scored 511 runs and taken 104 wickets at an average of 23.31.
His first-class debut also came in 2010, in May, against Oxford MCCU at the Parks, which was the first of 133 red-ball matches he has made for Middlesex. In that time, he has hit 3,334 runs, including a highest score of 103 not out, against Yorkshire at Lord’s. With the ball he has picked up a phenomenal tally of 480 wickets in the first-class game for Middlesex, taken at an average of 25.46.
In the T20 format Roland-Jones has amassed 61 caps for the Club, taking 74 wickets at an average of 24.04, and has 326 runs to his name.
Whilst Roland-Jones has taken 24 five-wicket hauls for the Club, the most memorable of them all will undoubtedly be the 6 for 54 he took at Lord’s against Yorkshire, on 23rd September 2016, to secure the County Championship title for Middlesex in extraordinary scenes at the Home of Cricket, taking a hat-trick to land the Championship for the first time in 23 years.
After a stellar year in 2016, which saw Roland-Jones finish the season with 54 Championship wickets, he received a call-up to the England side in 2017, giving him the opportunity to represent England on both the One Day International and Test stages that summer.
A memorable ODI victory came in May on home soil at Lord’s, when, with England in trouble against South Africa, on 82 for 7, Roland-Jones smashed a quickfire run-a-ball unbeaten 37, to rally the hosts to a score of 153. It proved to be in vain, as South Africa rattled off the run chase in less than 29 overs, although not before Roland-Jones had picked up the prize wicket of Hasham Amla.
His Test debut just a couple of months later was no less memorable, as he took figures of 8 for 149 against the same opponents and played a leading role in helping Engand to secure a comprehensive 239 victory in the third Test of the series at the Oval.
After five international appearances that summer, Roland-Jones had all but booked his place on the winter Ashes tour to Australia, before an ill-timed injury starved him of the opportunity.
In all, across the decade and a half that Roland-Jones has represented the Club, he has taken 658 wickets and amassed 4,171 runs for Middlesex.
Speaking of Roland-Jones being awarded a Testimonial Year this year, Middlesex Cricket’s Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Cornish, said:
“That moment when you award a player with a Testimonial Year is very special.
“It’s recognition of their loyalty, their commitment, their attitude, and not least of its acknowledgement of the efforts they have given for the Club. In Toby Roland-Jones you really couldn’t find a more deserving recipient.
“Toby has been a fantastic example of a model professional. He is a real leader, both out on the field and in the dressing room. He plays with passion, wears his heart on his sleeve, and gives everything for the Middlesex badge.
“His dedication to the game and his loyalty to Middlesex Cricket are qualities he should be proud of, and it gives us all an enormous amount of pleasure to reward him with a Testimonial Year this year.
“All at the Club very much look forward to supporting him wherever we can over the coming year, and we wish him every success.”
Middlesex Cricket’s Director of Cricket, Alan Coleman, commented:
“It’s so pleasing to be able to reward Rojo with a Testimonial Year in 2024 and is something he very much deserves.
“For many years he has been a player that has stood up and delivered when it was needed. He gives his all for Middlesex and is someone that genuinely inspires the younger players around him. He is a fantastic role-model and should be enormously proud of everything he has achieved in the game.
“With another year left on his contract, and the potential to extend that further, we have plenty more to see from Toby yet, however this year will be a special one for him, and gives his family, friends, and many supporters the opportunity to thank him for all he has achieved for the Club to date.
“I’d also like to pay tribute to the great people at Sunbury Cricket Club for the work that they have done in supporting Toby’s development for the best part of 30 years. He is a credit to those people, and to the Club as a whole.”
“I know I speak on behalf of everyone in wishing Toby every success this year and here’s to a successful Testimonial Year for the big man.”
On being awarded a Testimonial this year, Toby Roland-Jones, commented:
“I am very grateful and honoured to have been awarded a Testimonial Year in 2024.
“Middlesex has been my cricketing home for 15 years, and I am so proud to be recognised in this manner.
“I’m looking forward to what promises to be a really special year ahead and welcome the opportunity to thank the many people who have supported me on my cricketing journey”.
