Bob Gale was an attacking opening batsman who forged a successful partnership with Eric Russell. He made his first-class debut for Combined Services in 1955 and after 11 appearances for Middlesex in 1956, was a regular through to 1965. He passed 1000 runs six times, his best summer being 1961 when he made 1981 runs at 31.85. In 1962 he scored his only double hundred - 200 against Glamorgan. He was also able to bowl medium-pace or legspin. He joined the county's committee in 1989 and was chairman of the cricket committee until 1998 and was president from 2001 to 2003.
